The year in birthstones

It’s February and winter is almost at an end! We’re getting ready to welcome spring as we start seeing the lengthening of days, and the promise of new life as daffodils tentativley start to rise up from the earth. It’s also the month of romance when we celebrate the patron saint of romantic love on Valentine’s day. The birthstone for February is amethyst, a crystalline quartz that comes in a variety of shades ranging from pale lilac to reddish- purple.

This mystical stone has captured the heart of many for hundreds of years and was once as expensive as rubies. It is also the gemstone for the 6th year wedding anniversary.

Amethyst generally represents wisdom, serenity and is said to help boost creativity and mental clarity.

History of Amethyst

This gemstone was also believed to be a stone of protection, sometimes worn by soldiers in battle to keep them clear- headed.

The belief that the stone aided in mental clarity dates back to the Ancient Greeks, who believed the stone could guard against drunkenness. The name for amethyst comes from the word “amethystos”, which translates to “not intoxicated”. Ancient Romans also carried this belief but the origins of the association with protection from intoxication are disputed.

In one tale, the distinctive purple colour came from Dionysus (or Bacchus to Ancient Romans), pouring wine over a white stone that was then stained purple.

Amethyst in jewellery

We love creating unique pieces of jewellery featuring the February birthstone. Amethyst is a seven on the moss scale of hardness, so it’s great for a variety of jewellery and can be worn every day. However, some care should be taken as the stone can be vulnerable to scratches, especially in rings.
