What is jewellery certification and why might you need it?

Having the proper jewellery certification is important as it gives you a record of what your jewellery is worth. Certification also ensures quality, authenticity, and value.

Jewellery certification can include a report created by a team of gemologists to evaluate the quality of a diamond, or a valuation document to determine the value of a piece of jewellery.

Types of Jewellery Certifications

A valuation document is for assessing an item’s worth. This involves examining not only the gemstone quality, but also the metal type and craftsmanship for purposes like insurance, sale, or inheritance. Valuations are essential for insurance purposes in case anything gets lost, stolen or is damaged.  We are able to provide a valuation for our own jewellery that we make onsite.

A diamond certificate- or diamond dossier- is documentation from a highly trained team of gemologists, giving an impartial assessment on a diamond. During the grading process, the 4 C’s (colour, clarity, carat, cut) are strictly assessed using industry standard tools.  This is necessary as it guarantees the stone has been individually assessed by a trusted organisation. There are two main organisations that are widely used to provide diamond certification; The GIA and IGI.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA): Established in 1931, is a non-profit institute renowned for its gemological research. The International Gemological Institute  (IGI) is a gemological organisation which certifies diamonds, coloured stones and jewellery. It was established in 1975 in Belgium.

Is certification essential?

Not all diamonds come with certification and it isn’t essential if you are purchasing from a trusted jeweller with a history of selling diamonds. We often sell diamonds that are both certified and uncertified in our jewellery and have built a lot of trust with our customers over the last 20 years. You can see our many positive reviews to attest to this!

Choosing a reputable jeweller for certified jewellery

If you are interested in getting a diamond certificate for a diamond when purchasing a stock or bespoke piece from us, we can arrange to have it sent off to be certified at an extra cost. A diamond certificate is also not essential for getting your jewellery insured as the valuations we provide also cover the cost of the diamond and provide the stone details.
