The year in birthstones

Spring is finally here! The earth is waking up and the air feels crisp and bright. We’re all starting to notice and appreciate the longer days. The birthstone for March is Aquamarine, a gorgeous gem that comes from the beryl family- like emeralds!

This gemstone ranges from a cool to greenish blue and symbolises serenity and tranquility.

Aquamarine in jewellery

Aquamarine is a stone we love to create jewellery with! It’s a 7.5-8 on the Mohs hardness scale so is great for most jewellery, but it is important to be aware that the stone may still be vulnerable to scratches- especially in rings. This stone is represents the 19th wedding anniversary so is great for anniversary gifts as well.

History of Aquamarine

Aquamarine has been seen in jewellery dating back centuries. The ancient Egyptians and Sumerians, regarded the stone as a symbol of happiness and everlasting youth.

Not only does this dreamy gemstone feel like a piece of the ocean itself in crystalline form, but its name also literally translates to ‘water of the sea’ in Latin! Moreover, the oceanic connotations of aquamarine were valued by the ancient Greeks and Romans, who believed the stone protected sea- farers.

Ocean bubble

This ring from our ‘bubble’ collection feels like it’s been lifted straight from a mermaids treasure chest. Set with over 10 carats of the loveliest Aqua and features a massive round 9.22ct centre stone. The ring is claw-set in white gold and has four smaller aquamarines in an asymmetric cluster.
