Appreciating the beauty of our earth
The theme of earth day this year is “Our power, our planet” and we thought this would be a great time to talk about our role as an ethical jewellers. When handcrafting jewellery, it’s important to remember that most of the precious materials we’re working with have come directly from the earth itself. We appreciate the beauty of our planet and respect the earth in all aspects of sourcing and making jewellery. As an ethical jewellers, we have a responsibility to ensure we take care of how we source our materials. Here are a few ways we do this.
Recycled metals
Traditionally, the mining of metals and gemstones has funded armed conflicts and created unsafe exploitative labor conditions. At baroque, we use recycled gold which reduces our impact on the environment, and cuts out the possibility of unethically sourced metal. The amazing thing about recycled gold is that it can be melted down and used again and again, without loosing its purity.
Remodelling service
This leads on to our remodelling service. We are able to re-use your own gold and precious stones to create new pieces of jewellery, completely eliminating the need to purchase new stones or metal. Traceable gemstones
Another way we make sure we minimise our impact on the planet is by thoughtfully sourcing gemstones. All of our diamonds are verified through the Kimberley Process, and we work with trusted gemstone suppliers to ensure we source stones with transparent, traceable supply chains.
One such supplier we work with is ocean diamonds, an ethical diamond supplier that forgoes the mining practice entirely. They obtain diamonds through the unique method of diving for ones that have, over millions of years, been carried by rivers to the sea and settled in the seabed.
We absolutely love the origin of the diamonds from ocean diamonds, the romance of a diver finding that stone that has naturally made its way into the ocean.
